DAPHNE, Ala. (WALA) – The Baldwin County Republican Party is gearing up for a big dinner Friday, June 14 at the Daphne Civic Center.
Dr. Benjamin Carson will be the keynote speaker at the Summer Baldwin County GOP event.
Baldwin County Party Chairman Matt Simpson said the dinner is already sold out and say there has been a lot of buzz surrounding Dr. Carson’s appearance.
Many political big wigs have been urging Carson, who holds 60 honorary doctorate degrees, sits on the directors board of organizations such as the Kellogg Company, Costco and the governing body of Yale, and was named by CNN and TIME magazine as one of the nation’s 20 foremost physicians and scientists, to run for president.
Carson earned a large following of Republican supporters after his speech at the National Prayer Breakfast in February for his thoughts on politics and the Obama administration.
“We’ve reached a point where people are afraid to talk about what they want to say because somebody might be offended,” said Dr. Carson during that February speech. “People are afraid to say merry Christmas at Christmas time. It doesn’t matter if the person your talking to is Jewish or any religion.”
Carson has said he is not interested in running for office because of all the political correctness.
He said he believes in tax reform and wants to see citizens be less reliant on big government.
“We spent a lot of money on healthcare. Twice as much per capita as anyone else in the world and yet not very efficient,” he said.
Carson’s criticism of the president, who was sitting feet away, sparked a lot of controversy.
Baldwin County Republicans say they look forward to getting up close with Carson during the dinner.
